Dr Michael Fotheringham has been appointed as the new executive director of the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI), a role he will commence when Dr Ian Winter steps down in mid-December after 14 years in the role.

Dr Fotheringham is the current head of research services and deputy executive director of AHURI, and has a background as a public health researcher and policy specialist and executive in health and human services.

He said AHURI had a strong reputation for its housing research and that the organisation was ready to develop a more comprehensive approach to urban policy issues.

โ€œThere is now a great opportunity for AHURI to grow through increased emphasis on broader urban policy โ€“ including infrastructure, urban design, smart cities and the city deals,โ€ he said.

Board chairperson Tony De Domenico said Dr Fotheringhamโ€™s experience would prove invaluable in fulfilling AHURIโ€™s mission to deliver high-quality housing and urban research that influences policy development and improves outcomes for all Australians.

โ€œSince starting at AHURI in early 2014, Michael has been a dedicated and highly valued member of the executive team,โ€ Mr De Domenico said. โ€œHis appointment is testament to the skills he has already brought to AHURIโ€.
